Kuwait Architecture Research Lab
A collaborative platform uniting experts in architecture, urbanism, landscape, and design studies to produce research with real-world relevance.
The lab generates research across architecture, urban heritage, spatial behavior, and environmental performance — connecting academic work to the real spatial conditions of Kuwait and the Arabian Gulf.
Research objectives
Gulf vernacular & contemporary architecture
Advancing research on traditional and modern architectural expression in Kuwait and the wider Gulf region.
Urban heritage & cultural landscapes
Documenting and interpreting Kuwait's historic urban fabrics, traditional markets, and evolving cultural landscapes.
Spatial behavior & human experience
Investigating how people perceive, move through, and inhabit architectural settings using observational and analytical methods.
Mosque architecture & public space
Developing evidence-based design strategies for Kuwait's mosques and shared public environments.
Environmental performance & sustainability
Integrating daylighting studies, thermal comfort assessment, and energy simulation into architectural design research.
Research approach
Mixed methods, grounded in place
KARL employs a mixed methodological framework that combines architectural history, spatial analysis, and behavioral observation. The lab connects human experience with measurable environmental performance in architectural design.
Research is grounded in direct engagement with Kuwait's built environment — through field documentation, community interviews, and on-site spatial analysis — ensuring that scholarship remains tied to real conditions and local knowledge.
Institutional affiliation
KARL is an independent research lab that emerged from the Department of Architecture, College of Architecture, Kuwait University. The lab collaborates with academic institutions, public agencies, and cultural organizations in Kuwait and internationally. It supports student research, graduate theses, and interdisciplinary projects related to architecture, heritage, and the built environment.
